India’s Ruturaj Gaikwad named captain for Asian Games 2023
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the captain of the Indian men’s cricket team for the Asian Games 2023. The tournament will take place in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8. Gaikwad expressed his excitement and goal to win the gold medal in a video posted by the BCCI.
Other players selected for the squad
In addition to Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jitesh Sharma, and Washington Sundar have also been chosen to represent India in the 15-member squad for the Asian Games.
Opportunity for Gaikwad and the team
The BCCI has selected a second-string Indian team for the Asian Games as it coincides with the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in India from October 5 to November 19. Gaikwad sees this as a special opportunity to play a brand of cricket that will make the country proud.
Cricket returning to the Asian Games
Cricket was not included in the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, and India did not field a team. However, it is set to make a comeback in the 2023 edition in China.
