Aakash Chopra Reacts to R Ashwin’s Statement on Teammates
Former India opener Aakash Chopra has responded to spinner R Ashwin’s recent statement regarding teammates being colleagues instead of friends. Ashwin, who was dropped from the WTC 2023 final, performed exceptionally well in the 1st Test against West Indies in Dominica, picking up 12 wickets.
Ashwin’s Disappointment and Interesting Observation
Ashwin expressed his disappointment at not being selected for the final and made an intriguing remark about the Indian dressing room. He highlighted that in the present era, teammates are seen as colleagues instead of friends. According to him, everyone is focused on advancing their own careers and outshining their teammates, leaving little time for personal connections.
Prithvi Shaw Shares Similar Sentiments
Youthful Indian opener Prithvi Shaw echoed Ashwin’s sentiments in an interview with Cricbuzz. When asked who he opens up to in the Indian team, Shaw admitted that while there is conversation and banter among players, personal space remains personal, and he rarely opens up to anyone.
Aakash Chopra’s Perspective on the Matter
Aakash Chopra weighed in on the issue and provided an example from his observation of Australian players. He noted that although the Australian team members may not have liked each other off the field, they always backed each other on the ground, displaying a strong sense of unity and camaraderie. Chopra emphasized that successful teams don’t necessarily need a friendly or family-like atmosphere, but rather a competitive spirit and a collective goal of winning.
Chopra’s Personal Experience
Chopra shared his own experiences playing for Delhi and Rajasthan. He described the dressing room atmosphere in Delhi as not unfriendly but characterized by healthy competition among players. On the other hand, he found his time with Rajasthan to be the happiest, as players celebrated each other’s successes more than their own.
