Rahul Dravid Believes West Indies Cricket Will Bounce Back
Indian coach Rahul Dravid is optimistic about the future of West Indies cricket, stating that he sees no lack of talent or ability in the Caribbean. Dravid shared his thoughts ahead of the second Test between India and West Indies in Trinidad, scheduled to start on July 20, 2023.
The Struggles of West Indies Cricket
Despite being two-time World Cup champions, West Indies recently failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup. Their poor performance, including losses to Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, and Scotland, led to concerns about the state of the team.
In the previous World Test Championship cycle, West Indies finished 8th with just 4 wins in 14 Tests.
Emphasis on Infrastructure and Resources
Dravid believes that West Indies cricket should focus on improving infrastructure and utilizing available resources. He emphasized that talent and ability are not lacking in the region.
Dravid said, “I see great talent, I see great ability and I’m sure that just with the right kind of maybe emphasis on infrastructure and resources, I don’t see why West Indies cricket can’t go back to the glory days.”
Appreciating the Love for the Sport
Dravid acknowledged the disappointment felt by West Indies fans but praised their unwavering support for the team. He highlighted the passion and love for the sport in the Caribbean.
“One of the great things that people have here in the Caribbean is just the love of the sport and how they are keen to get behind and still rally around the West Indies, despite the difficult situations.”
Perspective on Comparisons
Dravid also addressed the pressure faced by the current generation of West Indian players, who are often compared to the legendary teams of the past. He acknowledged that it is challenging to live up to the standards set by teams led by Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards.
He concluded, “It’s not easy to compare your team against a legendary team like the one that Clive Lloyd led or Viv Richards led. I think that is gonna be tough for anyone.”
