Dinesh Karthik shares his thoughts on the Fab-four debate
Veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik recently discussed the Fab-four debate, which involves India’s Virat Kohli, England’s Joe Root, Australia’s Steve Smith, and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. These four batters have dominated the cricketing world since their debuts and are considered modern era greats.
The impact of playing different formats
Karthik pointed out that Virat Kohli’s regular participation in all three formats of the game has taken a toll on his body. In contrast, Smith and Root have primarily focused on playing ODIs and Tests. Kohli has played 110 Tests, 274 ODIs, and 115 T20Is, while Smith has played 100 Tests, 142 ODIs, and 63 T20Is. Williamson has played 94 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 87 T20Is, and Root has played 133 Tests, 158 ODIs, and 32 T20Is.
Virat Kohli’s potential in Test cricket
Karthik believes that despite the challenges, Kohli’s discipline and dedication could make him the highest Test century scorer in the world. He acknowledges that Australia and England have more opportunities to play Test cricket than India, giving them a better chance to score more hundreds. However, Karthik believes that Kohli’s commitment and performance across different countries make him a strong contender to achieve this feat.
Virat Kohli’s recent achievements
In the ongoing Test series against West Indies in Trinidad, Kohli scored his 29th Test century, marking his first overseas century in the format since December 2018. This century also brought his total international centuries to 76. Karthik added that although the past two years have not been Kohli’s best, his love for Test cricket remains strong. Furthermore, Kohli is just three ODI hundreds away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries in the format.
