BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has finally spoken on the future of the Indian Premier League. The 13th edition of the league was scheduled to start on March 29 but few days before the IPL 2020, the BCCI suspended the league till April 15 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, the BCCI had stated that their next action depends on the situation in the country. And unfortunately, the situation has just got worse in last few weeks.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country has crossed 8000, with 259 deaths so far. While the country is still under the 21 day lockdown, the states have already made it clear that the lockdown will be extended. The BCCI is yet to give any statement officially, but Sourav Ganguly hinted that the IPL is likely to be postponed.
The former India skipper stated that board officials are monitoring all the developments but insisted that as of now, nothing can be said. Sourav Ganguly said that he could not see things becoming normal at least before mid-May as he asked everyone to ‘forget IPL.’
“We keep monitoring developments. At the present moment, we can’t say anything. And what is there to say anyway? Airports are shut, people are stuck at home, offices are locked down, nobody can go anywhere,” Sourav Ganguly told.
“And it seems this is how it’s going to be till the middle of May. Where will you get players from, where do players travel? It’s just simple common sense that at the moment, nothing is in favor of any kind of sport anywhere in the world, forget IPL,” he added.
