A senior BCCI official has rejected Sri Lanka’s offer of holding the currently- suspended IPL 2020 in their country as India fights with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sri Lanka Cricket, on Thursday, offered to host the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League.
SLC offered its proposal after the BCCI announced that IPL 2020 had been suspended indefinitely owing to the rising concern over the spread of coronavirus in the country. SLC president Shammi Silva is positive that Sri Lanka would be devoid of the pandemic earlier than India and stated that SLC would write to BCCI soon.
However, the prominent voices within the BCCI feel that there is no point in discussing such a proposal in a closed world battling the COVID-19 pandemic right now.
“The BCCI will not be in a position to say anything when the world is closed,” a senior Board official said.
The official confirmed that currently, there is no proposal from the SLC, and there is no assurance when a meaningful discussion can take place on the subject even if it occurs.
Currently, international flights have been primarily suspended after numerous countries imposed lockdowns to contain the fatal virus.
“There is no proposal from SLC yet and obviously no discussion,” the official said when asked what will be the BCCI’s stand when the offer is on the table.
With the coronavirus outbreak bringing the world to a standstill, the 13th edition of the IPL was postponed from March 29 to April 15.
The BCCI is now taking a look at the October-November window for the IPL. The move can be possible only if the ICC decides to postpone the men’s T20 World Cup that is to be held later in the year, according to some sources on the board.
