Ashes 2023 Test: England vs Australia at Old Trafford
The much-awaited fourth Ashes 2023 Test match between England and Australia kicked off at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday (July 19). England won the toss and chose to bowl first, aiming to make early breakthroughs in the Australian batting lineup.
Early Wickets and Steady Partnership
Australia started their first innings cautiously, with David Warner and Usman Khawaja as openers. However, Khawaja was dismissed early after scoring just 3 runs off 19 deliveries. Warner, on the other hand, played some aggressive shots but also got out after making 32 runs off 38 balls.
Marnus Labuschagne, coming in at number three, stabilized the Australian innings with a patient half-century of 51 runs. He formed a crucial partnership with Steve Smith, who contributed 41 runs from 52 balls. Together, they added valuable runs to the Australian total.
England Strikes Back
Just when Australia seemed to be building a strong platform, England struck back with quick wickets. Labuschagne, who had reached a well-deserved fifty, fell victim to a brilliant delivery by Moeen Ali on the first ball of the 47th over. The spinner deceived Labuschagne with an off-break, resulting in a Leg Before Wicket (LBW) dismissal. Despite the umpire’s initial decision of not-out, the review by England captain Ben Stokes led to the dismissal being confirmed, and Labuschagne had to make his way back to the pavilion.
Tea Break Score and Bowling Performance
At the Tea Break, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh remain unbeaten for Australia, with the team’s score at 187/4 after 49 overs. England’s bowlers, including Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, and Mark Wood, all managed to take a wicket each. The match has been an intriguing battle so far, with Australia scoring at a good rate but England consistently taking wickets.
