Indian Cricket Team Makes Squad Changes for West Indies Test Series
After another disappointing loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2023, the Indian cricket team, led by coach Rahul Dravid, is making significant changes to their squad for the upcoming West Indies Test series. This series marks the beginning of Team India’s 2023-2025 WTC cycle. Despite consistently reaching the WTC finals, India has been unable to win the title. Determined to end their ICC title drought, the team is eager to make their mark in the upcoming WTC tournament.
Youngsters Earn Maiden Call-Ups
Following their loss to Australia in the previous WTC final, India has given opportunities to three promising young players. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Mukesh Kumar have earned spots in the Test squad due to their consistent performances in domestic cricket and for India A.
Changes in Squad
As the new WTC cycle begins, the selectors have decided to drop veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara and reinstate Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test side. Pujara’s exclusion has faced criticism, including from legendary spinner Harbhajan Singh, who voiced his disappointment and supported the experienced batter.
Pujara’s Omission and Harbhajan’s Support
Pujara’s exclusion came after his underwhelming performance in the WTC final. Despite his presence in England and playing county cricket before the final, he failed to make a significant impact. Harbhajan Singh praised Pujara as a pillar of strength in the Indian Test team, highlighting his role in doing the hard work for the team while others benefited from it.
Harbhajan’s remarks seemed to indirectly criticize Virat Kohli and other batters who have struggled in Test cricket recently. Kohli has only scored one Test hundred for Team India in the last four years.
“I believe Pujara deserves more respect than he has been given, and his removal from the team was a surprise to me. He is not the only one not scoring runs; there are others in the same team who are scoring runs at the same average,” Harbhajan concluded.
